Rackable Systems To Expand Server Family With New Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ Processors

High-Performance, High-Density Servers Leverage Industry-Leading Technology

MILPITAS, CALIF. -- April 21, 2005 --Rackable Systems, Inc., a leading provider of servers and storage products for scale out data center deployments, today announced the adoption of the newly launched Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ processor Models 265 and 865 with Direct Connect Architecture. Available across Rackable Systems’ line of highly dense, thermally efficient servers, the new AMD dual-core processor technology will further amplify performance and efficiency.

“It is incredibly exciting to see AMD’s dual-core processors come to market,” said Giovanni Coglitore, founder and chief technology officer at Rackable Systems. “As one of the world’s largest providers of AMD Opteron processor-based servers, we are pleased to offer a new series of solutions to our customers that truly raise the bar on performance and efficiency.”

Rackable Systems’ open architecture data center server designs leverage the full suite of AMD Opteron processors. Available in flexible 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U and blade configurations, Rackable Systems’ thermally efficient servers enable customers to achieve high levels of density and high performance. The award-winning C4002 leverages four AMD Opteron processors in a half-depth form factor.

The new line of Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors will integrate seamlessly into Rackable Systems’ server designs. AMD’s Direct Connect Architecture enables two cores to reside on the same die along with memory and I/O for improved efficiency. Each dual-core processor fits into the same thermal envelope as a single-core processor to achieve increased per-watt performance.

“AMD64 dual-core technology is a natural extension of our Direct Connect Architecture that customers with the latest Rackable Systems servers can upgrade to quickly and easily,” said Ben Williams, vice president, Commercial and Server/Workstation Business, AMD. “Fitting within the same thermal envelope as 90nm single-core products, the Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor offers the best performance-per-watt architecture in the market to help optimize power consumption in the data center.”
