The inaugural meeting of the AMD Global Consumer Advisory Board (GCAB) was
held on April 30, 2002 in Silicon Valley, California. The objective of the
first meeting was to look deeper into the issue of the growing gap that
exists today between technology innovation and adoption by end users.
The GCAB members agreed that a gap exists on a global basis between technology
innovation and consumer and small business adoption. While technology continues
to advance, consumers are not adopting new technologies at the same rate
as the pace of innovation.The
GCAB determined that there are five primary issues causing this disconnect,
including:
- The complicatedness
of new technology or the need for simplicity.
- The lack
of relevance to the consumer’s life,
- lack
of trust due to security issues and false promises.
- A narrow
perspective on the part of the industry introducing new technologies
or not taking a holistic approach.
- Socio-economic
costs associated with adopting new technologies.
The GCAB also
concluded that a select number of the issues should be validated through
additional research, and agreed that the group will begin evangelizing and
educating consumers and industry stakeholders about the gap and these five
contributing issues.
