STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN -- 6/22/2005 -- AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that Carmen Systems, who develops, markets and implements resource optimization solutions for airline and rail industries, has deployed an AMD Opteron™ processor-based platform designed to improve the operations management services the company provides to industry some of Carmen Systems’ current clients in the transportation industry.
Carmen Systems provides resource optimization software solutions that are designed to help transportation businesses improve efficiencies, reduce costs and improve profits. The company’s solutions, for example, enable airline companies to plan complex flight schedules involving thousands of flights and assign crew schedules based on preferences and government regulations. The high-performing system, powered by the AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture, allows Carmen to more quickly process the calculations that enable their software to manage these complex operations.
“Successfully managing incredibly complex resources is the key to success in the highly competitive transportation industry,” said Jan-Olof Ohlsson, Chief Financial Officer at Carmen Systems. “The AMD Opteron processor-based system provided an eighty percent performance improvement over that of our existing systems, and now powers a more efficient solution that will save our customers money by helping them manage their resources more efficiently.”
“Global enterprises such as Carmen Systems are increasingly turning to solutions based on AMD64 technology in order to achieve enterprise-class scalability, unparalleled flexibility and high performance,” said Gianluca Degliesposti, director, Server and Workstation Business Development, AMD, EMEA. “Carmen Systems recognizes how critical technology is to their – and their customers’ – success. Since the AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture eliminates traditional processor bottlenecks by directly connecting critical components to the central processing unit, the processor improves overall system performance, as Carmen Systems has found.” Both the airline and rail industries are driven by resource constraints such as crew and fleet scheduling, and optimizing flight or rail schedules in order to maximize the number of passengers over different periods of demand. Carmen provides Web-based integrated decision-support solutions for crew and fleet scheduling that, for instance, allow their customers’ crews to review their schedules or input schedule preferences remotely.
The AMD Opteron processor-powered systems were delivered by Konsulthuset, a specialist in client/server solutions.

About the AMD Opteron™ Processor
Today, more than half the Forbes Global 100 or their affiliates, representing the world’s most competitive industries, now rely on AMD Opteron™ processor-based systems to run their enterprise applications and break free to new levels of performance. The AMD Opteron processor, based on AMD64 technology with Direct Connect Architecture, made history as the industry’s first x86 multi-core processor for servers and workstations that is both 32- and 64-bit capable. Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors deliver higher performance within the same power envelope as single-core processors because they were designed from the ground up for multi-core computing. With a broad portfolio of dual-core and single-core solutions and a robust 64-bit ecosystem, AMD and its customers are leading the way to the next evolution of enterprise computing.
