Kabu.com Deploys Proprietary Trading System on Egenera BladeFrame Powered by AMD Opteron Processors

— Incorporation of Business Continuity Planning, Including Remote Disaster Backup, Represents a First Among Japanese Securities Companies —

TOKYO, Japan -- 10/24/2006 -- Egenera, K.K. today announced that Kabu.com Securities Co., Ltd., one of the five largest Internet securities firms in Japan, has launched a proprietary trading system (PTS)* built upon a business continuity planning (BCP) platform that is run on the Egenera® BladeFrame® system featuring Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ processors.

Many Japanese securities system platforms do not include a disaster backup system, and existing systems at securities firms also lack similar provisions, according to Kabu.com. Kabu.com’s BCP system that serves as the platform for the new PTS system is a first for a Japanese securities firm as a system that has comprehensive business continuity planning. If a disaster should arise at the main system located in Fukuoka, the backup system located in Tokyo is designed to take over operations. The disaster backup and remote operation functions of the main system in Fukuoka use datacenter virtualization technology from Egenera.

Sudden increases in trade volume on trading systems, which have traditionally been considered difficult to handle, can now be more easily managed by the Egenera BladeFrame system, with clustered blade servers featuring Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors, by increasing the number of cluster nodes during heavy transaction periods.

Kabu.com Securities has deployed its production BladeFrame system with 11 Egenera Processing Blade™ modules and its backup BladeFrame with eight blades. All blades specified by Kabu.com feature either 2-socket or 4-socket Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors. The use of AMD Opteron processors helps the system maintain superiority in performance-per-watt. The system is also capable of handling sudden increases in trading volume or new operational needs by increasing the number of clustered blades to boost processing capacity.

“The reliability and price/performance of the Egenera BladeFrame designed for remote operation as well as the high performance and power saving features of the AMD Opteron processors were important factors in our decision and have greatly and synergistically contributed to the system’s overall success,” said Yoshinobu Abe, Head of Information Technology, Kabu.com Securities Co., Ltd.

“Kabu.com’s success demonstrates the ability to optimize reliability, scalability and cost performance through the use of Egenera virtualization technology and AMD multi-core processors,” said Mike Thompson, president and CEO, Egenera. “We’re very pleased to be an integral part of Kabu.com’s mission-critical datacenter.”

“Securities firms around the world place a high priority on business continuity regardless of the potential source of the disruption from power outages to hostile attacks,” said Kevin Knox, vice president, Commercial Business, AMD. “Working alongside Egenera, we remain committed to addressing the hardware requirements to create this robust BCP system, while also providing high-performing business processing with optimized power management to help reduce the total cost of ownership of the entire system.”

*PTS - Proprietary Trading System is similar to ECN, Electronic Communications Network, in the securities industry in the United States.
