ASUS Launches Innovative Server Products Powered by Quad-Core AMD OpteronTM Processors

Precision-node for Building Computing Farm

Taipei, Taiwan -- 9/10/2007 -- ASUS, a leading provider of high-performance server solutions, today launched two new server solutions powered by Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors. The innovative KFSN4-DRE series server board and RS161-E5 server system with advanced design guidelines are equipped to support AMD’s new power efficient features such as Dual Dynamic Power Management and Dual Link technology for leading-edge native quad-core performance, targeting the High-Performance Computing (HPC) market and enterprise-class applications.

The Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor is an industry-defining native quad-core microprocessor that continues AMD’s tradition of energy efficiency, performance and virtualization leadership. Designed for a seamless upgrade path from Second-Generation AMD Opteron processors, these server products are specially designed with the new processor to help reduce datacenter infrastructure costs.

ASUS’ KFSN4-DRE series is one of the first platforms ready for Dual Dynamic Power Management, AMD’s new power efficient feature that offers separate power planes for cores and memory controller for optimum performance and reduced power consumption. The platform’s front Parallel-Balance CPU and memory placement are designed to increase thermal efficiency up to 20 ~ 30%. The 16-DIMM 64GB memory scalability helps achieve maximum computing power available from Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors and the memory resources can increase performance and efficiency for many workloads in virtualized environments.

Along with the KFSN4-DRE server board, the upcoming ASUS RS161-E5 is ASUS’ 1U server system powered by the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor. Featured with ASUS Smart Fan II Technology, the RS161-E5 can automatically adjust cooling conditions based on the system workload and ambient temperature, providing a quiet working environment and low power consumption. Through the integration with exclusive ASUS system management tool – ASWM and ASMB3-SOL, it facilitates the manageability of IT environments and helps keep infrastructure costs down.

Leveraging Enhanced AMD PowerNow!™ technology, the new ASUS server platforms can help lower the total operation cost of datacenters or HPC server farms by reducing processor power consumption during non-peak workloads, thereby reducing heat generation and decreasing strain on cooling systems, to help protect investments in today’s demanding server environments. In addition to being optimized for AMD’s Dual Dynamic Power Management, the ASUS KFSN4-DRE series leverages other innovative power management capabilities in Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, such as Independent Dynamic Core Technology, which allows each core to be controlled individually for better power management, helping to reduce power consumption.

“The Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor offers significantly improved performance and scalability, as well as performance-per-watt. We are confident of taking full advantage of these benefits and providing high performance server products to our customers with the new platform and dedicated ASUS solution,” said Jerry Shen, Vice President, ASUSTek Computer Inc.

“We applaud ASUS’ efforts to optimize their new platforms for AMD’s innovative power management capabilities, because today’s high-performance computing customers are equally concerned with performance-per-watt as they are with sheer performance,” said Billy Wang, Corporate Vice President of Greater China Sales, AMD (NYSE: AMD). “Built on AMD’s unmatched Direct Connect Architecture, the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor delivers greater levels of performance in the same thermal envelopes as previous AMD Opteron processors and advances performance-per-watt capabilities through Enhanced AMD PowerNow! technology, helping customers increase performance capabilities without altering datacenter infrastructure.”
