Hynix Announces High Density Memory Modules for New Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ Processor
ICHEON, Korea --
11/13/2008 --
Hynix Semiconductor Inc. ("Hynix") today announced that its family of 800MHz high density memory modules, built with 60/50nm-class 1Gb DDR2 DRAM and optimized for the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processor, have been evaluated per AMD procedures and specifications and shown reliable operation.
The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, built on 45nm process technology and featuring Direct Connect Architecture to help reduce bottlenecks inherent in traditional front-side bus architectures, can benefit from the Hynix family of 1GB, 2GB and 4GB 800MHz Registered DIMMs . Additionally, AMD has also evaluated 1Gb DDR2 based 8GB 533MHz, 2-Rank, Registered DIMM using MetaRAM technology. MetaRAM technology enables the use of low cost mainstream DRAM components in the design of next generation modular densities. The MetaRAM chipset also alleviates loading on the memory channel allowing full speed operation. A two-way platform based on the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor can thus support a maximum of 128GB of system memory using the 8GB module. Compute-intensive applications, like CAD and EDA simulations, database transaction processing, business intelligence, digital content creation and virtualization can benefit from this high memory capacity.
Hynix is one of the first suppliers in the industry to develop a 50nm-class process technology. The finer process design-rule of the 50nm-class product reduces die size by approximately 40% compared to 60nm-class process technology, significantly reducing costs and improving speed-power characteristics. The "three-dimensional transistor" architecture and "W-DPG (Tungsten-Dual Poly Gate)" technologies minimizes current leakage to further reduce overall power consumption. Hynix now uses the 50nm-class technology to manufacture both DDR2 and DDR3 DRAMs in 1Gb and 2Gb densities.
All Hynix modules evaluated by AMD are posted on the AMD website at

"Our collaborative efforts with AMD have been very successful and have helped Hynix introduce a range of memory module solutions, from 1GB to 8GB, to suit our customer's needs", said Mr. Ji Bum Kim, Senior VP of Marketing at Hynix. "This can help facilitate adoption on AMD Opteron™ processor-based systems", he said.
"AMD values its work with Hynix, and is proud to support its efforts to create quality DRAM products as a result of this relationship," said John Fruehe, director, Server and Workstation division, AMD (NYSE: AMD). "By staying focused on the changing data center landscape, Hynix remains an important industry innovator and leader. The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors will add to the value Hynix delivers their customers, enabling superior memory bandwidth and virtualization capabilities."
