Semtech Announces Series of Current-Mode Power Management Controllers to Support Upcoming AMD Opteron™ and Eighth-Generation AMD Athlon™ Processors
Camarillo, Calif. --
Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for use in communications, portable devices, computers, and industrial equipment, today announced that it has qualified the SC2439 Bi-phase, High Performance, Current-Mode Controller to provide power management support for the upcoming AMD Opteron™ and eighth-generation AMD Athlon™ processors.
"Semtech is pleased to be an infrastructure supplier of power ICs for the latest AMD microprocessors and fully support AMD’s introduction of the industry's first x86-64 technology," said Ken Boyden, Director of Desktop & Server Power Management Products at Semtech. "Having worked closely with AMD since the introduction of the original AMD Athlon processor, we are now delighted to enable the more sophisticated and powerful upcoming AMD Opteron and eighth-generation AMD Athlon microprocessors."
The new bi-phase SC2439 PWM controller implements several breakthrough features that reduce system costs, simplify board design, and improve the robustness of the overall power solution. A novel (patent-pending) current-mode topology is utilized which assures optimum current sharing and thermal balance between phases. This device supports AMD's strict static and transient voltage requirements as well as all specifications for changing VID on-the-fly.
“Semtech provides innovative technology in the power IC market, and through their support of future eighth-generation AMD processors, provides a stable, reliable power solution for the x86, 64-bit computing environment,” said Rich Heye, vice president platform engineering and infrastructure, Computation Products Group, AMD. “With systems based on AMD Opteron and eighth-generation AMD Athlon processors, customers will be able to benefit from optimized 32-bit performance and migrate to 64-bit environments as needed.”
