AMD Athlon™ MP Processors Power Creativity in Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams

—AMD, Janimation and Softimage combine to create eye-popping special effects for hit sequel—

SUNNYVALE, CA -- 9/18/2002 -- AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced its collaboration with Janimation and Softimage in the production of the Troublemaker Studios-Dimension Films’ Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams. Janimation’s critically-acclaimed special effects elements were developed with SOFTIMAGE|XSI software on 3DBOXX and RenderBOXX systems from BOXX Technologies powered by AMD Athlon™ MP processors 1900+.

Janimation, a Dallas-based effects and animation company, rapidly completed a series of special effects scenes for Spy Kids 2 on servers and workstations based on AMD Athlon MP processors, including pre- and post-production for the Sea Creature sequence.

AMD Athlon MP processor-based systems provide performance and power suited for the most demanding digital content creation and rendering, while also providing individual users a powerful platform to edit home movies or photographs.

“Using advanced digital content creation technologies including AMD Athlon MP processors and SOFTIMAGE|XSI software, Janimation was able to concentrate on the nuances that make special effects great,” said Ed Ellett, vice president of Client Business for AMD’s Computation Products Group. “This powerful, reliable development and rendering solution helps increase productivity, and allows more time to be spent on creation rather than render cycles.”

“Janimation was able to rapidly develop design concepts, drafts and final product for the Sea Creature sequence by leveraging powerful technology and a whole lot of imagination,” said Steve Gaconnier, Janimation’s Chief Creative. “Using systems based on AMD Athlon MP processors provided rendering stability and speed that allowed the Janimation team to focus on creative details that made the special effects pop off the screen.”

“SOFTIMAGE|XSI provides content developers with an amazing palette of options for digital character animation. XSI’s advanced character construction and easy setup enabled Janimation to quickly generate customized, film-quality versions of the Spy Kids 2 Sea Creatures,” said Alan Waxenberg, Business Manager 3rd Party, Softimage. “Softimage and AMD Athlon MP processors combine to provide customers increased performance for all phases of production, including advanced modeling, 2-D/3-D compositing, hair, render management and final rendering- resulting in increased creativity and productivity.”

“With 3DBOXX and RenderBOXX, BOXX Technologies provides the processing power and stability digital content creators demand,” said Ed Caracappa, director of sales and marketing for BOXX Technologies. “Innovators in entertainment and digital film production such as Janimation can streamline workflow and allow more time for creativity using BOXX systems powered by AMD Athlon MP processors.”

About the AMD Athlon™ MP Processor
The AMD Athlon MP processor is a seventh-generation x86 processor designed for high-performance multiprocessing servers and workstations.

A key advantage of AMD’s multiprocessing platform is Smart MP technology, which greatly enhances overall platform performance by increasing data movement between the two CPUs, chipset and memory system. Smart MP technology features dual point-to-point, high-speed 266MHz system buses with Error Correcting Code (ECC) support designed to provide up to 2.1GB per second per CPU of bus bandwidth in a dual-processor system. Smart MP technology also has an optimized Modified Owner Exclusive Shared Invalid (MOESI) cache coherency protocol that manages data and memory traffic in a multiprocessing environment.

The AMD Athlon MP processor features the patented QuantiSpeed™ architecture, which includes a high performance full-speed cache with hardware data pre-fetch, a fully pipelined superscalar floating point engine, and an exclusive L2 Translation Look-aside Buffer (TLB). The processor also incorporates 3DNow!™ Professional technology, which has 51 new instructions that extend AMD’s 3DNow! technology, enabling smoother, richer and more lifelike images, more precise digital audio and an enriched Internet experience.

The AMD Athlon MP processor is compatible with AMD’s stable Socket A infrastructure, and supports DDR memory technology.
