Fairchild Semiconductor Announces
CPU Core Voltage Regulator Support for Upcoming
AMD Opteron™ and AMD Athlon™ Processors
with Hammer Technology
San Jose, California --
10/14/2002 --
Fairchild Semiconductor International today announced the FAN5098 DC-DC Voltage Regulator IC for the upcoming AMD Opteron™ and AMD Athlon™ processors with Hammer technology. The FAN5098 is intended for use in providing precise, efficient power regulation for the CPU VCORE in desktop, workstation and server applications. The FAN5098 uses a multi-phase architecture, including unique control-loop methods to improve load regulation and transient response, specifically addressing the requirements of advanced microprocessors.
“Fairchild collaborated with AMD to develop the FAN5098 which provides a cost-effective, complete solution while meeting all requirements of AMD processors with Hammer technology,” said Abid Hussain, Product Marketing Manager, Fairchild Semiconductor.
The two-phase FAN5098 includes built-in high-performance MOSFET drivers for the highest integration available in the industry. 5-bit VID codes allow for output voltages from 0.800V to 1.550V. Dynamic VID transitions are supported per AMD specifications with glitch-free output voltage and controlled slew-rate. Typical output current is 42A and is easily scalable thus enabling flexible motherboard designs to support future AMD processors. Current sensing is achieved with loss-less MOSFET Rds-on methods and current matching is closely controlled between the output phases.
Programmable Active Droop™ enables the reduction of output capacitors while meeting transient voltage regulation requirements. Loop compensation is provided internally to ease design-in and reduce external component count and cost. Over-voltage/under-voltage protection, programmable current limiting, programmable soft-start, thermal protection and power-good output are built-in features for increased system safety and reliability.
“The new Fairchild FAN5098 voltage regulator provides efficient power regulation for the CPU VCORE in AMD solutions,” said Ed Gasiorowski, director of the AMD Infrastructure Enablement Group. “Shared AMD and Fairchild customers will benefit from stable, reliable solutions.”
The FAN5098 is available in a 24-pin TSSOP package and is rated for operation from 0oC to +70oC
