Tempest Computers, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based firm which specializes in the design, assembly and integration of high-end, high-availability servers, has been located in UPARC since 1998. The company includes among its customers: Carnegie Mellon University, Seagate Technology, Cisco, Duquesne University, Alcoa, Curtiss-Wright, and numerous other regional corporations and governmental entities.

Recent advances in processor speeds and information storage are substantially changing the server landscape.
