Metrowerks OpenPDA™ Solutions Leverage AMD Alchemy™ Processor for Personal Connectivity Devices
Metrowerks Set to Deliver Comprehensive Development Platform to Configure, Integrate, Build and Deploy Handheld Devices
Embedded Systems Expo and Conference – Tokyo --
7/9/2003 --
Metrowerks Corporation and AMD have teamed up to create a comprehensive platform to enable the creation of low-power consumption, high-performance personal connectivity devices based on the Linux® Operating System (OS) -- OpenPDA™ Development Studio for the AMD Alchemy™ Solutions DBAu1100™.
OpenPDA Development Studio for AMD Alchemy DBAu1100 combines a robust software solution with the powerful AMD Alchemy™ Solutions Au1100™ processor, memory capabilities and peripherals together on a single board for a full, intuitive development environment for designers. The Au1100 is engineered to operate at speeds up to 500MHz using only 0.5 watt of power to enable long battery life. Additionally, the incorporation of peripherals with this high performance MIPS compatible core offers an opportunity to help lower system costs, small form factors, system power requirements, simple designs at multiple performance points and short design cycles.
"OpenPDA Development Studio for the AMD Alchemy Solutions Au1100 is a powerful technology that helps OEMs quickly and efficiently design and bring to market handheld computing devices based on the Linux operating system," said Phil Pompa, AMD's vice president of marketing for the Personal Connectivity Solutions group. "By offering a comprehensive hardware and software design solution for developing PDAs based on the Linux operating system, Web pads and other multimedia handheld computing devices, our customers can expect to experience the benefits of an open source standard that can leverage the small form factor, high-performance, low-power design of the AMD Alchemy processor family."
The Metrowerks OpenPDA solutions offer OEMs a powerful, multimedia PDA hardware and software solution and a host of standard applications such as: games, multimedia player, voice recording, image viewer, synchronization, browsing and Java™ technology. The OpenPDA solutions also offer a full Personal Information Management suite, which includes calendar, contacts, to do list, e-mail and text editor programs. The platform includes an embedded Linux OS kernel, the Trolltech Qtopia multi-language user interface, the esmertec Jeode™ Java Virtual Machine, and the Opera Software full-featured Web browser. Extended capabilities such as desktop synchronization utilities and mobile networking may also be included.
“This fully-integrated solution is designed to eliminate the time and effort required to port, integrate and optimize the software and hardware, each of which usually are required to produce feature-rich, powerful devices including PDAs, Web pads and other multimedia handheld computing devices,” said Berardino Baratta, Metrowerks chief technology officer and vice president of the Metrowerks Linux Solutions Group. “The innovation of the Metrowerks OpenPDA platform and performance of the Au1100 processor is expected to help boost development cycles and reduce overall system costs, which is expected to eventually provide consumers with more advanced products at lower price points.”
