AMD and Advantech Collaborate To Deliver AMD Geode™ Processor-Based Solution
First AMD Geode™ GX2 Processor-Based Customer Development Platform Demonstrated at Computex
Taipei, Taiwan --
9/22/2003 --
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (NYSE: AMD) today announced that it has collaborated with Advantech Co. Ltd. to deliver an x86-based customer development platform based on the AMD Geode™ GX2 processor and Advantech’s System on Module (SOM) solution. This will be demonstrated at Computex Taiwan 2003. The first collaboration to emerge from AMD’s recent acquisition of the Geode technology from National Semiconductor will use the AMD Geode GX2 processor to deliver superior performance for media-rich applications.
The AMD Geode GX2 processor is optimized for power, performance and design flexibility for customers wanting embedded x86-based solutions in the market. The compact, versatile customer development platform will enable customers to create products and applications targeted at embedded markets. Due to the flexibility of the System On Module solution, Advantech can offer customers cost-effective, targeted solutions by simply reconfiguring the base development platform.
Advantech’s SOM is a complete CPU system module, comprised of a CPU, chipset, and memory, that is integrated into a customer solution platform. This architecture enables the development of application specific solution platforms for vertical markets, while using the same SOM board. With Advantech's solution, manufacturers can decrease development time and reduce costs for new products.
“Working with a company like Advantech allows AMD to provide a comprehensive solution to the market, while driving to meet the development needs of our customers,” said Erik Salo, director of marketing for AMD's Personal Connectivity Solutions group. “This customer development solution will provide customers with an enhanced design experience while helping to reduce design, development and validation times in the creation of low-power, high-performance products, resulting in faster time to market.”
The Customer Development Platform is a flexible two-board solution composed of Advantech’s System on Module featuring the low-power AMD Geode GX2 CPU. Customers have access to a complete development solution including a complete set of platform documentation, reference schematics, utilities, design guidelines, drivers for Windows CE, Windows XP/XPE and Linux, major device datasheets and a Windows CE image, aiding in product design and allowing for quicker time to market. Delivering flexible functionality within the space of a 2.5" hard disk drive (68 mm x 100 mm) the AMD Geode GX2 processor platform includes:
- The AMD Geode GX2 processor with:
- Integrated North Bridge graphics accelerator and display controller
- DDR memory controller
- The AMD Geode 5535 chipset which features the following:
- Integrated USB 1.1 controller
- IDE controller/interface
- AC97 Sound Card
- LPC and IR interfaces
- 128 MB DDRAM
- CompactFlash socket
Advantech’s Flex-ATX compatible development board (229 mm x 191 mm) features:
- Multiple I/O ports (USB, serial, parallel and PS/2)
- Enhanced IDE HDD interface
- 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface
- Multiple PCI expansion slots supporting 33 and 66 Mhz operation;
- ATX power supply
- In-circuit emulator with compatible JTAG interface to support software development and debug
- Support for ACPI power control interface
- Suspend to RAM and RTC
“Customers’ demand for improved device performance and lower-power consumption, along with increased flexibility, are critical drivers in the information appliance market,” said Jeff Chen, vice president, Advantech. “For example, this SOM features AMD Geode GX2 processor’s multi-port PCI interface, to enable customers to further customize and enhance their solutions. In addition to the inherent flexibility of the processor, the development board can also be customized and expanded to best meet a company’s design needs.”
AMD will demonstrate the AMD Geode GX2 processor-based Customer Development Platform at Computex Taiwan 2003, September 22-26, at Exhibit Hall 3, Taipei International Convention Center.
The AMD Geode GX2 processor-based Customer Development Platform will be available in the fourth quarter of 2003.
