3Com Powers New Small Business Solutions With National Semiconductor's High-Performance Geode Technology
National's Geode™ Technology Enables 3Com to Accelerate Time-to-Market to Meet Emerging Small Business Customer Needs for Network Storage and Online Communications
Santa Clara, CA --
National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM), the leading technology solutions enabler for information appliances, today announced that 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS), the small business networking leader, has chosen National Semiconductor's Geode™ technology to be incorporated into 3Com's radically simple, low cost OfficeConnect™ network server family. National's high-performance, low-power Geode processors allow 3Com's new OfficeConnect Network Storage Server and OfficeConnect eMail Server to deliver network storage and e-mail communications, tailored with rich connectivity to meet the needs of small businesses.
"By integrating National Semiconductor's silicon solution into our design and development of the new network servers, we are able to provide small business customers with the industry's most complete and radically simple solution at the right price" said Kathy Rocha, vice president of 3Com's Small Business Division. "National's industry-leading Geode technology met our technical requirements and helped us to provide optimal server applications."
A network server is a thin server appliance optimized for one or more applications such as network storage or e-mail with an emphasis on ease of use, affordability, and high reliability. 3Com's new small business network servers are designed for customers who have the business requirements for these applications, yet may not have dedicated IT staff to support these needs.
The OfficeConnect Network Storage Server allows small businesses to improve their daily operations and securely store vital files and data. The OfficeConnect eMail Server enables small businesses to control and dramatically improve vital e-mail communications. The network storage server is currently available and the OfficeConnect eMail server is expected to ship in Q1 2001. 3Com plans to ship the 3Com Internet Server for small business in December 2000. "3Com's adoption of our Geode technology for their new network servers is another indication that National offers the best combination of performance, price and power consumption for information appliances," said Ziv Azmanov, director of thin client business unit at National.
Powering 3Com's new OfficeConnect Network Storage and OfficeConnect eMail servers are National's Geode GX1 processors, which are optimized to deliver high-performance, low-cost, and easy-to-use technology at the lowest power consumption. The X86 software compatibility to popular applications and development tools also allows 3Com to accelerate their time-to-market. In addition to the Geode GX1 processors, the two new network servers from 3Com incorporate a wide variety of National's silicon, including the Geode CS5530 companion chip, and several analog components to enhance the overall user experience.
