National Semiconductor Welcomes Audrey™ To The World
3Com's new Internet appliance powered by National's Geode™ Processor
Santa Clara, CA --
National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE:NSM) today announced its collaboration with 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS) on 3Com's eagerly-awaited new Internet appliance, Audrey™. The new device -- the first Internet appliance from 3Com's Ergo? product line, is the first product to follow the technology alliance with 3Com announced by National last month.
Audrey is a consumer-friendly device that provides virtually instant (or near-instant) access to email and Internet service. At its heart is National's Geode GX1 chip, an optimized microprocessor that delivers powerful, easy-to-use multimedia technology by integrating on-chip graphics, audio, memory control, and PCI interface. Its x86 architecture provides consumers with a fast and seamless Internet experience due to the support of popular software plug-in modules.
"Our customers want simplicity, speed, and full Internet access," said Don Fotsch, vice president and general manager of 3Com Corporation's Internet Appliance Division. "Using National's technology solutions, we have outfitted Audrey with the power and features consumers will need for a rich Internet experience."
In addition to using the Geode GX1 processor, Audrey incorporates a wide variety of National silicon, including a companion chip and several industry-leading analog parts such as power management chips and audio amplifiers.
"Internet appliances such as Audrey provide a terrific alternative for consumers who want email and Internet services at the push of a button - but don't have the time or patience to deal with an overly complicated PC," said Jean-Louis Bories, executive vice president and general manager of National's Information Appliance Group.
Audrey is available in the United States for an estimated street price starting at $499. The product may be ordered online beginning October 17, 2000 at www.3Com.com/ergo or at selected retailers in October 2000.
3Com simplifies how people connect to information and services through easy-to-use, connectivity products and solutions for consumers and commercial organizations. The company also provides access infrastructures and IP services platforms for network service providers. For further information, visit www.3com.com
