AMD Names David Somo Vice President, Marketing, Computation Products Group

SUNNYVALE, CA -- 4/17/2000 -- AMD recently named David Somo vice president of marketing for the Computation Products Group. He is responsible for all marketing strategies and programs for all processor families, including product, segment, technical, strategic, and field marketing. Somo will report to Larry Hollatz, group vice president and general manager, Computation Products Group.

"David brings world-class knowledge of sales and marketing strategies to this position," Hollatz noted. "With his broad experience and proven leadership abilities, I'm confident he will help drive the Computation Products Group to achieve even higher levels of success."

Immediately prior to his new position, Somo was vice president of sales and marketing for the Americas. Prior to that, he was director of sales responsible for Compaq Computer Corporation. As director, Somo drove sales with Compaq's Presario desktop and mobile PC business that helped lead to AMD processors achieving significantly increased unit share of the U.S. retail desktop PC market and greater than 50% unit share of the U.S. retail notebook PC market in 1999.

Previously, Somo was director of marketing at AMD where he was involved in a number of major initiatives and compiled a remarkable record of success. He designed and executed worldwide product launches for the AMD-K6®, AMD-K6-2, and AMD-K6-III microprocessors, including the Super7™ infrastructure support strategy for these highly successful products. He also devised and implemented various marketing programs associated with AMD's acclaimed 3DNow!™ technology.

Somo has been with AMD since 1991, holding various sales and marketing positions within the company. Prior to joining AMD, he was employed at VLSI Technology as an applications engineer. Somo holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Arizona State University.
