AMD Leadership
In introducing AMD64, an x86-compatible platform that integrates 32- and 64-bit computing, AMD claimed pole position in the race to develop tomorrow's processors today. With the subsequent success of its AMD Opteron™ processor and AMD Athlon™ 64 processor, and the recent launch of its innovative AMD Turion™ 64 mobile technology, AMD's leadership is enabling a broad range of users to take advantage of next-generation computing features today.
Just two years after its debut, the AMD64 ecosystem comprises more than 1,300 software packages created by more than 300 developers. And the imminent release of Microsoft® Windows XP Professional x64 Edition® ensures that AMD and its partners will continue to pioneer the evolution of server, workstation, desktop, and mobile computing.
Driven by an unwavering corporate focus on customer needs, the AMD64 team is leading the industry to pervasive 64-bit computing through advances such as:
- Direct Connect Architecture, which allows processors to address and eliminate the challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures
- HyperTransport™ Technology, which provides simplified, "glueless" multiprocessing
- Multi-core technology, which offers greatly improved performance
Together, these and other AMD led innovations offer users and developers:
- A clear, affordable, and flexible migration path from 32-bit to 64-bit computing
- Greater memory addressability and reduced bottlenecks
- Power saving and noise reduction benefits
- Faster data processing and manipulation
- Improved built-in security and increased reliability
- More realistic modeling and gaming
- Unprecedented potential for future expansion
Products
The AMD Opteron™ Processor
The AMD Opteron™ processor enables x86 32- and 64-bit computing for 1- to 8-way server and 1- to 4-way workstation solutions.
Designed with a focus on unprecedented performance, present and future compatibility, investment protection, and reduced total cost of ownership, the AMD Opteron processor offers numerous benefits:
- Simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing capabilities, allowing users to migrate to new 64-bit software when needs demand and budgets permit
- Direct Connect Architecture, which reduces bottlenecks and provides optimized memory performance
- Multiple coherent HyperTransport™ links and 256 Terabytes of memory space, which provide plenty of I/O bandwidth and performance capability to meet future application needs
- Scaling from 1-way to 8-way across entire data or computer centers using the same hardware and software infrastructure, thus not harming the bottom line
- AMD PowerNow!™ Technology, which provides performance on demand and reduces CPU power at idle by up to 75%
The AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor
The AMD Athlon™ 64 processor is the first Windows®-compatible x86 processor to bring 32- and 64-bit computing to desktop and mobile platforms.
Designed with a focus on performance, compatibility, investment protection, and reduced total cost of ownership, the AMD Athlon™ 64 processor family offers many benefits, including:
- Simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing capabilities, allowing users to migrate to new 64-bit software when needs demand and budgets permit
- AMD Enhanced Virus Protection, which when combined with Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 2 prevents damage from certain viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, thus protecting mission-critical applications and valuable data while preventing the spread of network viruses to other systems
- AMD PowerNow!™ Technology and AMD's Cool'n'Quiet™ Technology for power management:
- AMD PowerNow! Technology invisibly and continuously adjusts the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processor's operating frequency and voltage according to the task at hand, increasing notebook battery life and reducing heat, noise, and power consumption
- AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology offers similar benefits for AMD Athlon 64 processor-based desktops, such as proven power savings of up to 35 watts over non-equipped computers, and cooler, quieter operation during all but the most demanding tasks
- HyperTransport™ Technology, which boosts performance by reducing I/O bottlenecks and increasing bandwidth
- 3DNow!™ Technology, enabling tomorrow's multimedia quality today
AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology
