This document provides information on how to resolve a specific boot issue that may be experienced with some 2nd Generation Ryzen™ Threadripper™ Processors when installed on an AMD Socket TR4 X399-series motherboard.
The information in this document is organized into the following sections:
The AMD Socket TR4 platform is designed to be a fully featured, scalable solution with support for multiple processors, with varying capabilities. Since the release of the AMD Socket TR4 X399-series motherboards in late 2017 with the AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ Processors, there have been several BIOS updates made available through our motherboard partners. These updates not only provide improved system performance but also expand support for newer processors as they become available.
AMD introduced the new 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Threadripper™ (2000-series) Processors in August 2018. To enable support for these new processors, an updated BIOS may be required. Due to the rapid pace of innovation, and strong demand for 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Threadripper™ Processors, it is possible that some users with an AMD Socket TR4 X399-series motherboard paired with a 2nd Gen Ryzen™ Threadripper™ Processor introduced in 2018, may experience an issue where the system does not boot up during initial setup.
The boot up issue likely means a system is running a BIOS version that does not have support for newer processors. This can be resolved by updating the motherboard BIOS to the latest version, which can be performed by using the USB Flashback option, a feature which is present on all AMD Socket TR4 X399-series motherboards.
For a list of supported processors per BIOS version, please refer to the CPU Support List document available on your motherboard manufacturer's website:
- ASRock: https://www.asrock.com/support/cpu.asp
- ASUS: https://www.asus.com/support/cpu_support
- Gigabyte: https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Support/CPU-Support
- MSI: https://www.msi.com/support/motherboard/cpu-support
USB Flashback provides the user the ability to update the motherboard BIOS without the need of having a CPU or system RAM installed, only the ATX power connector is required.
More information on how to update the BIOS using USB Flashback can be found in your motherboard user manual. User manuals for current AMD Socket TR4 X399-series motherboards can be found online and are linked below:
