Resize an Image to Fit the Screen of an HDMI Display

This document provides information and instructions on how to resize an image to match the entire screen area of an HDMI display using the HDMI Scaling option within Radeon Settings.

HDMI Scaling Overview

When connecting an HDMI display to an AMD Graphics product, the image may not scale to properly fit the entire screen area of the display.  This can result in the image being underscanned or overscanned, as explained below: 

• Underscan – The image rendered on the display is smaller than the physical area of the screen.  This creates a black border around the image, as shown in the picture below.

• Overscan – The image rendered on the display expands beyond the physical area of the screen.  The portions of the image that extends beyond the edge of the screen cannot be viewed.

The HDMI Scaling option within Radeon Settings can be used to correct an overscan/underscan issue. 

In order to use HDMI Scaling the following conditions must be met (otherwise the scaling option may be greyed out):

1. The HDMI display must be connected to the AMD graphics product using one of the following:
   • HDMI to HDMI cable
   • DVI to HDMI cable/adapter
   • DisplayPort to HDMI cable/adapter
      
2. The display must first be set to its native resolution and refresh rate.  Please refer to the display's user manual for specification information.

3. AMD graphics driver must be installed.  It is recommend to install the latest supported graphics driver for your AMD Graphics product.  For instruction on install the latest graphics driver, please refer to article: How-To Install Radeon Software on a Windows® Based System

Adjusting the Image Using HDMI Scaling

To adjust the screen image using the HDMI Scaling option within Radeon Settings, follow the steps below:

NOTE!  If HDMI Scaling is at 0% but the image is underscanned and cannot be adjusted to fill the screen area, then ensure that the Image Size option in the on-screen menu of the display is set to Auto or Normal.  Please refer to the display's user manual for more information.

1. Open Radeon™ Settings by right-clicking on your desktop and select AMD Radeon Settings.
    

2. Select Display.

3. The HDMI Scaling slider should be as shown in the example below.  HDMI Scaling value defaults at 0% and can be adjusted using the slider.

5. Move the slider to adjust the image until it fits the entire screen.

5. NOTE!  If HDMI Scaling is at 0% but the image is underscanned and cannot be adjusted to fill the screen area, then ensure that the Image Size option in the on-screen menu of the display is set to Auto or Normal.  Please refer to the display's user manual for more information.
    
6. Close Radeon Settings when done.
