Built on highly efficient, high-performance Radeon™ Rays technology, Radeon ProRender 's complete, scalable ray tracing engine uses open industry standards to harness GPU and CPU performance for swift, impressive results.

This Radeon ProRender plug-in for Autodesk® 3ds Max® is a feature rich solution which enables the user to render high quality images of their models. With this tool, users can render and then perform a host of post image processes.

Note: If you updated to Microsoft Windows® 10 Fall Creators Update, verify that OpenCL™ support is enabled on your graphics card.

Material Library for Radeon ProRender

The Material Library for Radeon ProRender has been updated with new materials which also now uses Uber Shader as a basis. The shared Material Library (Blender, 3ds Max and Maya) for Windows® and macOS® is now separated from the Radeon ProRender Plug-in Installers However, the material updates have been made for all Operating Systems.

It should also be noted that the files for the Material Library are to be updated independently of the plug-in Installers.

Radeon ProRender for 3ds Max v2.4 Highlights

  • Added .rpr export format.
  • Added adaptive subdivision.  Adaptive subdivision allows the user to specify the size in pixels to subdivide to.  1 being to divide so faces are 1 pixel in size, and 2 would mean coarser subdivision.  (1 is recommended).  This will take into account the size of the object in screen, so faraway objects will not over-subdivided.
  • Bilateral denoiser is now the selected default in the UI.
  • A number of Uber3 default values have changed from 0 to 1: ReflectionWeight, RefractionWeight, CoatingWeight, EmissiveWeight, EmissiveIntensity, SSSWeight, Transparency.
  • Updated Uber shaders:
    • Diffuse backscattering option, allows simple backlighting for objects like tree leaves or semi-translucent film.
    • Clearcoat thickness and transmission color.  Allows simulating effects like a lacquer on a surface, allowing the artist to specify how thick the coating is, and if the coating has a color to the substrate, for example a yellowish tint to a varnish on furniture.
    • Refraction absorption, for glass and liquid objects that scatter light, for example deep water or glass with particles in it.
    • Per lobe normals.  Artists can specify a normal map for each lobe, for example in car paint, a different normal map can be used for just the clearcoat to simulate microscratches from waxing the surface, while the underlying material has a smoother normal map.
    • Refractions (Glass) Now default to not allow caustics, this will lead to faster, less noisy images as caustics are not computed unless necessary.  For materials that the user does want caustics for, simply enable the checkbox in the refraction section of Uber
  • Reorganization of render settings, allowing clearer user control of render settings.
    • Different device configurations for viewport and final renders. 
    • Set number of CPU threads for CPU renders (additionally remove a limitation of 32 threads to support Threadripper systems).
    • Control ray depth separately for diffuse, shadow, reflections and refraction
    • Added support for 3dsMax 2019. (Support for 3dsMax 2016 has been dropped)
  • An ambient occlusion node is added for various uses.  This is helpful for simulating "dirt" on a material or any time a material is wished to be blended or changed based in concave sections of geometry.  Set this to use the front side to blend on the crevices, or back for pointed parts.
  • Added support for iterative progressive resolution rendering (preview mode) in Active Shade.
  • Improved performance of Uber materials when mesh polygon counts were high.
  • Physical Lights have been made more consistent with 3dsMax native lights.
  • Physical Lights now work in Active Shade mode.

Fixed Issues

  • Fixed the install location of the “Maps” directory in the MacOS material library installer.
  • Ambient Occlusion node now works correctly with multi-GPU rendering.
  • Issues with Uber Coating roughness are fixed.
  • Issues with sun + sky system are now fixed.
  • GPU + CPU renders sometimes exhibited "lines" with the difference between which device was rendering was visible. This has been addressed to be less noticeable.
  • Issues seen while blending two Uber shaders are now fixed.
  • Issues with multi-GPU rendering at end of render have been fixed.
  • PBR and Uber shaders are made equivalent to Autodesk® Maya and blender shaders
  • Various Render settings have been cleaned up
  • Uber: Clearcoat and refraction absorption on uber is now a color instead of a float
  • Normal map node now functions equivalent to Autodesk® Maya and Blender.  Second map input is removed
  • Uber metalness parameter now works as expected with 0 values.
  • Light count (in render stamp) was previously overcounting lights and not correctly reporting emissive geometry
