Radeon™ ProRender is a powerful physically-based rendering engine that enables creative professionals to produce stunningly photorealistic images. Built on highly efficient, high-performance Radeon™ Rays technology, Radeon ProRender's complete, scalable ray tracing engine uses open industry standards to harness GPU and CPU performance for swift, impressive results.

This Radeon ProRender plug-in for Blender™ ​is a feature rich solution which enables the user to render high quality images of their models. With this tool, users can render and then perform a host of post image processes.

Material Library for Radeon ProRender

The Material Library for Radeon ProRender has been updated with new materials which also now uses Uber Shader as a basis. The shared Material Library (Blender, 3ds Max and Maya) for Windows® and macOS® is now separated from the Radeon ProRender Plug-in Installers However, the material updates have been made for all Operating Systems.

It should also be noted that the files for the Material Library are to be updated independently of the plug-in Installers.

Radeon ProRender for Blender v1.8 Highlights

  • New Features:
    • Interactive viewport rendering is much more responsive by keeping all displays in OpenGL.
    • MacOS Mojave is accelerated using the Metal raytracing API.
    • Added nodes for procedural UV mapping.  These include:  Spherical, Planar, Cylindrical, Camera Projection and Triplanar.  Find these nodes in the "mapping" section of the node menu and hook them to the UV mapping input of texture nodes.
    • RGB to Grayscale conversion node.
    • Sequences of .rpr files can be exported for an animation.
  • Added a "Flat Color" shader.  Users should use this instead of the emissive node they want a material with just a texture or color and no lighting at all. Pink "error" shaders use also now this instead of emissive.
  • Added ‘Out of Core’ texture cache setting for viewport and material renders (set in size of system memory to use for cache). This will improve performance of viewport rendering with many textures.
  • Uber shader changes:
    • Added refraction normal.
    • Added "Sheen" setting.  Useful for cloth rendering.  This has settings for a "color" of the Sheen to use and how much to tint to white (for fuzzy materials).
    • Lightgroup AOVS added.  New AOVs called "Environment", "Key", "Fill", and "Emissive" lighting aovs.  These split final colors by the light that contribute them.  So for example all light from the world environment light goes to the "Environment" aov.  Lamps can specify if they are in the Key or Fill light group.
    • Environment light overrides.  Now you can set one color or map separately for reflection, refraction, diffuse, or transparency.
    • Added a menu to the viewport to switch view mode for interactive rendering.

Fixed Issues

  • Fixed the install location of the “Maps” directory in the MacOS material library installer.
  • Ambient Occlusion node now works correctly with multi-GPU rendering.
  • Issues with Uber Coating roughness are fixed.
  • Issues with sun + sky system are now fixed.
  • GPU + CPU renders sometimes exhibited "lines" with the difference between which device was rendering was visible. This has been addressed to be less noticeable.
  • Issues seen while blending two Uber shaders are now fixed.
  • Issues with multi-GPU rendering at end of render have been fixed.
  • Older files with Uber shaders should render without issues now.
  • Issues related to GLTF export for macOS have now been fixed.
  • Changes to denoiser settings are updated during interactive rendering.
  • Issues with changing frames while viewport rendering are fixed.
  • Denoiser on macOS uses correct GPU setting (the one selected for rendering)
  • Fixed Shadow Catchers.
  • While Rendering with fewer samples, update number incrementing issue has now been fixed.

Known Issues

  • Procedural texture mapping is not yet enabled for GPU rendering on macOS.
  • Hair is not supported on macOS yet.
