Radeon™ ProRender is a powerful physically-based rendering engine that enables creative professionals to produce stunningly photorealistic images. Built on highly efficient, high-performance Radeon™ Rays technology, Radeon ProRender 's complete, scalable ray tracing engine uses open industry standards to harness GPU and CPU performance for swift, impressive results.

This Radeon ProRender plug-in for Autodesk® ​Maya®​ is a feature rich solution which enables the user to render high quality images of their models. With this tool, users can render and then perform a host of post image processes.

Radeon ProRender for Maya v2.4 Highlights

  • Add checkbox to use Metal native raytracing API to render settings.
  • Updated Uber shaders:
    • Diffuse backscattering option, allows simple backlighting for objects like tree leaves or semi-translucent film.
    • Clearcoat thickness and transmission color.  Allows simulating effects like a lacquer on a surface, allowing the artist to specify how thick the coating is, and if the coating has a color to the substrate, for example a yellowish tint to a varnish on furniture.
    • Refraction absorption, for glass and liquid objects that scatter light, for example deep water or glass with particles in it.
    • Per lobe normals.  Artists can specify a normal map for each lobe, for example in car paint, a different normal map can be used for just the clearcoat to simulate micro scratches from waxing the surface, while the underlying material has a smoother normal map.
    • Refractions (Glass) Now default to not allow caustics, this will lead to faster, less noisy images as caustics are not computed unless necessary.  For materials that the user does want caustics for, simply enable the checkbox in the refraction section of Uber
  • Reorganization of render settings, allowing clearer user control of render settings.
    • Different device configurations for viewport and final renders. 
    • Set number of CPU threads for CPU renders (additionally remove a limitation of 32 threads to support Threadripper™ systems)
    • Control ray depth separately for diffuse, shadow, reflections and refraction
  • An ambient occlusion node is added for various uses.  This is helpful for simulating "dirt" on a material or any time a material is wished to be blended or changed based in concave sections of geometry.  Set this to use the front side to blend on the crevices, or back for pointed parts.
  • Better support for instanced objects
  • Exporting of geometry and materials to the renderer has been refactored and optimized
  • Added support for ignoring selected objects when rendering
  • Invisible objects are no longer exported to the renderer as a performance optimization
  • The place texture node now works with Radeon ProRender materials
  • "Camera Motion Blur" is now added.

Fixed Issues

  • Shadow softness defaults to 0 for Maya directional light nodes.
  • Crash with AOVs fixed.
  • Refraction weight, emissive weight, emissive intensity, transparency level now default to 1.
  • Antialias Cell size and AAcell size viewport render globals removed and all samples are used for antialiasing.
  • Memory usage for meshes with multiple materials attached has been optimized
  • CPU + GPU rendering works as expected
  • A random crash that could occur when the plugin logs an error has been fixed
  • A random intensity value for area lights has been addressed by assigning Luminous efficacy a default value
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when stopping an IPR render
  • Undo command naming has been cleaned up for physical light commands
  • The sun position component has been rewritten
  • Adaptive subdivision uses less memory
  • Float Tiff textures should work properly now

Known Issues

  • Intel® integrated graphics are disabled on macOS, however CPU mode is available.
  • Denoiser does not work with CPU rendering and is disabled.

ISV Certification Notes

  • Due to Maya-MtoA software issue Trac #3142, some Viewport Draw modes for stand-ins draw an infinite line. Workaround is to toggle the Viewport Draw Mode of the stand-in in the Attribute Editor.
  • Autodesk® Maya® 2017/2018 may show gray patch in playback in certain models due Maya issue Maya 41945. Workaround is to click on a different frame on timeline or to click on first frame.
