What is AMD Socket AM5?

AMD Socket AM5 is a current-generation processor platform spanning multiple AMD desktop and entry server CPU families, delivering a common system design foundation for PCIe® 5, DDR5, and other modern high-speed interconnects.

The LGA (Land Grid Array) design means the pins are in the socket (motherboard), not on the CPU. This provides higher pin density, better reliability for the CPU and improved electrical/thermal performance.

Chipset Options

All AMD Socket AM5 motherboards with 600 and 800 series chipsets support AMD EPYC 4000 and Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series processors—giving you flexibility across a wide range of boards.

The Native AMD EPYC 4005 Series Server CPU 

The AMD EPYC 4005 Server CPU provides 28 PCIe Gen5 lanes. These can be used directly by Chipset-less (Knoll Activator) Platforms, which may be best for dense, cost-optimized designs.

The B650 Chipset

The B650/B650E chipset is a popular choice with OEM/ODM vendors offering expandable servers for general workloads. It takes 4 PCIe Gen5 lanes from the CPU and provides 12 PCIe Gen4 and Gen3 lanes, USB3 and other I/O ports. This increases the total PCIe lines from 28 (native) to 32 (native plus chipset)

Other Chipsets options and Ryzen™ 9000 and 8000 Series Server CPUs

AMD Socket AM5 motherboards support other chipset options which today are mainly used with AMD Ryzen™ 9000 and 8000 Series Server CPUs, but are still compatible with AMD EPYC™ 4000 Series Server CPUs.
