AMD DASH CLI Incorrect Default Permissions Vulnerability
AMD ID: AMD-SB-9008
Potential Impact: Arbitrary Code Execution
Severity: High
Summary
A researcher reported an incorrect default permissions vulnerability within the AMD DASH CLI Software.
The AMD Desktop and mobile Architecture for System Hardware (DASH) Command Line Interface (CLI) is a command-line application designed to perform out-of-band management tasks (power management, asset inventory, alerts, etc.) using Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) DASH.
The researcher’s report noted the AMD DASH CLI Software installation directory inherits its permissions from the parent folder during the installation process. The researcher found that the Access Control List (ACL) permissions for the installation folder and its subfolders/files were not appropriately configured, which could allow lower privileged users to escalate privileges, potentially resulting in arbitrary code execution.
AMD reproduced the issue and believes the vulnerability occurs because the AMD DASH CLI operates with elevated privileges, becoming vulnerable when the user consciously changes the installation directory to a non-default location during installation.
