AMD Ryzen™ Master Vulnerability
Summary
The researchers reported two distinct issues affecting AMD Ryzen™ Master:
AMD Ryzen™ Master Utility is a tool designed to unlock and customize the performance of AMD Ryzen™ processors. It can provide a user-friendly interface for overclocking, monitoring system performance, and adjusting various system settings such as power and curve optimization.
The first report noted that during installation, AMD Ryzen™ Master may allow execution of malicious DLLs, potentially allowing for privilege escalation. AMD believes this issue arises from insufficient verification of the setup folder’s creation and usage during installation, and Ryzen™ Master allowing side-loading of DLLs. As a result, a low-privileged attacker could exploit this process by placing malicious DLLs within this directory before installation, potentially enabling arbitrary code execution with elevated privileges when an administrator installs AMD Ryzen™ Master.
The second report identified a use‑after‑free condition in the AMD Ryzen™ Master driver. AMD determined that the issue occurs because a global pointer is freed but not nulled, while an IOCTL handler continues to read from the dangling pointer. This could allow a local attacker to trigger a use-after-free condition, potentially leading to a crash or denial of service.
