Overview
This article explains BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) and UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), why a BIOS update may be needed for an AMD Ryzen™ desktop system, and where to get the correct BIOS update.

What are BIOS and UEFI?
BIOS and UEFI are motherboard firmware that help a PC start up. UEFI is the newer standard that replaced BIOS, but the word “BIOS” is still commonly used when referring to motherboard firmware.
This software helps the computer start the processor, work with memory and other motherboard hardware, and communicate with Windows®.

When might a BIOS update be needed?
A BIOS update may be needed when a motherboard does not already support a newer AMD Ryzen™ desktop processor. If the BIOS does not support the installed processor, the computer may fail to boot.

Where to get BIOS updates
Get BIOS updates and instructions from the system or motherboard manufacturer’s website and documentation. The motherboard manufacturer’s customer service department can also provide support.

If the system cannot boot
If the PC does not start after installing a new processor, the BIOS may need to be updated first. Try these options:

  1. Check with the retailer: Ask the store where the motherboard was purchased whether BIOS update service is available.
  2. Use an older supported processor (if available): If a processor works with the current BIOS, install that processor, update the BIOS, then install the new processor.
  3. Use USB BIOS Flashback: If the motherboard supports USB BIOS Flashback, follow the motherboard instructions to update the BIOS from a flash drive.
  4. Contact the motherboard manufacturer: If the other options are not available, contact the manufacturer for support or RMA assistance.
