Transforming Order Scheduling with Generative AI: the AMD and SAP® Innovative Journey

In January 2023, AMD launched the AXCENT program, a major initiative aimed at unifying our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems by implementing SAP S/4HANA®. This integration was designed to consolidate the business operations of AMD and its subsidiary, Xilinx™, focusing on streamlining finance, supply chain management, and human resource functions into a single efficient platform. The transition also presented challenges that needed innovative solutions.

Enter Generative AI: A Transformative Solution

To tackle these challenges, AMD IT worked with the SAP Lighthouse Gen.AI program. By leveraging cutting-edge Large Language Models (LLMs), AMD aimed to develop an AI-driven assistant designed to:

  • Reduce inquiry response time from 20-30 minutes to under 2 minutes.
  • Achieve potential time savings of approximately 90% for order inquiries.

Designing the Solution

Our Generative AI bot's architecture integrated several vital components which allowed us to:

  • Deploy the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) to connect the AI hub with our SAP S/4HANA environment.
  • Create a user-friendly interface enabling specialists to input sales order numbers efficiently.
  • Enable AI to analyze multiple factors such as allocation data and supply chain availability, providing timely insights.

Enhanced Efficiency

The initiative yielded significant improvements in operational efficiencies, such as:

  • Reduced response times for order inquiries, helping to free specialists from repetitive tasks.
  • Saved an estimated 3,000 hours annually, allowing teams to allocate resources more strategically.
  • Expanded access to the bot for customer operations and sales teams, fostering self-service capabilities and enhancing decision-making.

Ongoing Improvements

After the initial rollout, AMD continued to enhance the Generative AI system:

  • In January 2024, we implemented robust security measures to help protect sensitive order information and restrict access to authorized personnel.
  • We collaborated with our SAP basis teams to establish stringent access controls, helping safeguard our operational environment.
