This article provides step by step instructions on the installation, removal and / or re-installation of the supplied PIB heatsink / fan unit. Included is a list of recommended thermal materials required for re-installation.

Take proper electrostatic precautions before handling motherboard or processor.

  • Whenever possible, avoid working on a carpeted area, especially in cool, dry areas
  • Dissipate any static electricity by touching a grounded metal object, such as the system metal chassis before working with the system components
  • Use antistatic devices, such as wrist straps before handling any electronic devices

PIB Heatsink / Fan Installation (Initial Installation):

  1. To install the heatsink, place the heatsink on the processor with it centered in the retention frame matching the heatsink clip with the socket mounting lugs (the heatsink should have full contact with the processor). Make sure the retention clip is aligned with the plastic lugs on the retention frame.
  2. Carefully push straight down on the retention clip, one side at a time, until both sides of the clip are hooked to the retention frame lugs. Some force may need to be applied.
  3. Carefully turn the cam lever down.
  4. Connect the fan power lead to the proper connector on the motherboard (refer to your motherboard manual for fan connector location).

Note: Check the installation completely to make sure heatsink is installed correctly before starting the system.

PIB Heatsink / Fan Un-Installation:

  1. When re-installing the heatsink, re-apply an AMD approved thermal solution to your clean processor. This thermal solution should be applied in a thin uniform layer. AMD has found a 34-35 mm square in a thin layer (approximately 0.06-0.08 mm thick) provides good coverage of the processor lid while not being excessive.

Note: Grease may flow over the edges of the processor and reach the socket if excessive amounts are applied. This is not desirable. For more detailed instructions on thermal grease application, please refer to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the product you are currently using.
