Recommendations and expectations for installing display driver updates for AMD legacy graphics products
Purpose of this document:
A number of AMD graphics products have been moved to a legacy support model are no longer supported by current AMD display driver releases. For more information about AMD software support for legacy graphics products, see KB Article: AMD Radeon™ Software Support for Legacy Graphics Products
This article describes recommendations for updating or completing fresh installations of AMD display drivers on systems installed with AMD legacy and supported graphics products.
Display driver updates are no longer available for legacy AMD graphics products therefore it is recommended that users continue using their existing drivers or install the final Beta driver that is available with the release of the AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition.
What should I do if my AMD legacy product is installed on an AMD CPU/APU laptop?
If your AMD legacy graphics product is installed on an AMD CPU or AMD APU laptop, it is recommended that you install the Microsoft WHQL certified version of the AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 15.7.1 Update driver which supports both AMD legacy and supported graphics products.
Alternatively, a Non-WHQL certified version of the AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Update driver can be installed.
Note that there are currently no plans to release further driver updates for AMD legacy graphics products.
What should I do if my AMD legacy product is installed another type of system?
If your legacy product is installed on a system that is also installed with an AMD supported graphics product, it is recommended that you first uninstall the legacy product before proceeding with driver installation/upgrade. Driver installation and upgrade on such systems must be done systematically as incompatibility between legacy products and newer driver releases can result in errors such as display corruption, blank screens, and unexpected driver behaviors.
To properly install/update display drivers on systems installed with legacy products, read and carefully follow the steps in this article.
When updating/installing the display driver in the above scenario (systems with a combination of supported and legacy graphics products), a warning message appears informing users that precautionary steps are required before driver installation.
Automatic Driver Download and Installation
To automatically detect and install the display driver for your graphics product, click Download Now on the http://support.amd.com/en-us/download page as shown below.
- The AMD AutoDetect utility launches to provide general information about your system and graphics hardware.
Note: It may take a few seconds for the utility to analyze your system and provide the appropriate information. On some systems, it can take a few minutes.
To begin downloading the specified driver, click Download Now. If your system is not installed with a legacy graphics product, the driver is automatically downloaded and you will be guided through the installation process.
If your system is installed with a legacy graphics product, (along with supported graphics product) the following warning message appears instead.
- Manual Driver Download and Installation
For users who choose to manually download the driver, the same message is shown once the download is complete and if the driver utility has detected that your system is installed with a legacy graphics product (along with AMD supported graphics product). This message appears before the start of the installation.
Note: It may take a few seconds for the utility to analyze your system. On some systems, it can take a few minutes.
What to do?
It is recommended that you do not continued with the installation/upgrade of newer drivers on systems with legacy graphics products to ensure driver compatibility with your graphics product.
If you choose to continue with the installation/upgrade, you must first uninstall all legacy graphics products by doing the following:
- In the warning message, click Cancel.
- Shut down your system.
- Remove any legacy (incompatible) graphics products.
- Restart your system.
- Continue with the installation of the downloaded driver.
Note: Users can choose to dismiss the warning message and continue with the installation/upgrade of drivers for legacy graphics products however AMD cannot ensure proper driver or system behavior after such installations/upgrades. System errors and behaviors exhibited after such installation/upgrade can be caused by a variety of factors therefore it is important that you troubleshoot each of the possible causes to prevent them from recurring.
AMD expects users to use their own discretion when choosing to continue driver installation on systems with legacy graphics products as doing so can result in unexpected graphics-related issues such as performance drop, unexpected game crashes, and system errors.
It is recommended that users continue to use their current drivers for legacy products or to carry out the proper steps for installing/upgrading the display driver as detailed in this document.
