Automotive: TrueCar and AWS

Challenge: TrueCar wanted to empower its rapid growth by providing computing capacity that could adjust with seasonal traffic fluctuations, accelerate new product development, and enable data-driven solutions, issues its current data center wasn’t solving.
Solution: Through Premier AWS Partner Network Consulting Partner Onica, TrueCar deployed Amazon EC2 instances in the T3a, M6a, and C6a families powered by AMD EPYC processors, leveraging Amazon AWS technologies including Direct Connect, Amazon Simple Storage Service, and Amazon CloudFront.
Results: After migrating thousands of virtual machines to AWS, TrueCar drastically reduced its management overhead, while engineering teams were given the flexibility to test ideas due to the easy deployment and lowered costs, dropping timeframes from months to minutes for spinning up new environments. In numbers, TrueCar enjoyed 10 percent lower costs while maintaining application performance, and 25 percent cost reduction from a combination of choosing the AMD instance family for its core infrastructure and rightsizing instances.
“Thanks to Amazon EC2 instances powered by AMD EPYC CPUs, we saved money and freed up time for our engineers to innovate on the car shopping experience for our customers.” – Joshua Go, VP of Infrastructure Engineering, TrueCar
Cloud Services: Shadow

Challenge: Shadow wanted to prove that a cloud PC could deliver performance akin to a high-end desktop when it came to gaming. Shadow aimed to enable this level of ability streamed from its data center-based servers, but wanted to do so at an affordable, accessible price for end users.
Solution: After evaluating multiple options, Shadow upgraded its previous provision, switching to 32-core 3rd Gen AMD EPYC™ processors, using the AMD EPYC™ 7513 for its standard offering and the AMD EPYC™ 7543P for its high-end offering, equipping the latter with eight GPUs to serve eight users simultaneously.
Results: With this configuration, Shadow found it could stream a comparable performance of its reference high-end gaming desktop via an internet connection, while providing 65 percent better performance than its previous provision, ultimately fulfilling the dream of a full-gaming PC experience via the cloud, for an affordable price.
“With the help of AMD EPYC CPUs, we can deliver very high-end performance to the user at a very affordable price... We now tell our users: ‘Go and try Shadow. The power upgrade is EPYC!’” – Yannis Weinbach, Director of the Consumer Business Unit, Shadow
Financial Services: Emirates NBD Bank

Challenge: Emirates NBD wanted to simplify its data center infrastructure by standardizing it on a more flexible and generalized private cloud solution, enabling the bank to further focus on its digital transformation and improve service delivery efficiency.
Solution: Evaluating a solution based on using AMD EPYC processors against others, Emirates NBD deployed 100+ HP ProLiant servers powered by 3rd Gen AMD EPYC™ 75F3 processors, running Kubernetes® containers and VMware® virtual machines as the core technology foundation of its private cloud infrastructure.
Results: 42 percent faster performance than an alternative, on average, and the reduction of virtualization software licenses by 20 percent. The bank can now also make better use of its infrastructure outside of daytime hours for data processing and can deliver logs in real time.
“We found AMD EPYC CPUs were 42 percent faster than an alternative on average. We haven’t had any issues migrating over. We can now run the same number of VMs on fewer servers.” – Ali Rey, Senior Vice President Technology Platforms at Emirates NBD
Financial Services: Bullish and Google Cloud

Challenge: Bullish was searching for a cloud technology platform that provided dependability and availability it needed for its global regulated exchange for cryptocurrency assets, alongside the delivery of industry-level security.
Solution: Bullish settled on Google Cloud Confidential Computing instances powered by AMD EPYC processors, deployed as the company’s virtualized infrastructure. This solution kept data in memory encrypted and offered a highly secure collaborative framework and maximum flexibility for a Defense in Depth and Zero Trust security framework.
Results: Bullish is now able to provide its unique combination of traditional exchange elements with decentralized finance, confident that its data is protected in use, encrypted in transit and at rest, and enables verified security for its entire execution stack.
“We have the ability to know and trust everything running in our environment, but we’re also confident that nothing outside of what we know and trust can somehow execute. We have a verifiable, trusted boot state, a verifiable operating system and verified software.” - Matt Presson, Lead Security Architect, Bullish
Manufacturing and Logistics: Lobster Logistics Cloud

Challenge: Facing the global environmental impact of carbon emissions and soaring energy costs, Lobster Logistics Cloud focused on supporting customers in more energy-efficient logistics, while making its own contribution to sustainability.
Solution: With support from Innovations ON, its managed service provider and trusted advisor, Lobster Logistics Cloud transitioned smoothly from existing AWS instances powered by previous-generation AMD processors to those powered by 2nd Gen AMD EPYC™ processors.
Results: Reduced the power consumption of its AWS instances by 20 percent, increased performance by 15 percent, and lowered operating costs by 10 percent.
“With AMD EPYC processors, we are seeing 15% more performance while helping to reduce our carbon footprint and our IT operating costs have come down by 10%.”1 – Niko Hossain, CEO of Lobster Logistics Cloud
Science & Technology: CERN

Challenge: The challenge for CERN was to find a cost-effective hardware platform that met the requirements of collecting huge throughputs of data collected from detectors on the Large Hadron Collider.
Solution: CERN deployed 2nd Gen AMD EPYC™ 7742 processors, with 64 cores, in detector data collection servers.
Results: Not only did the AMD EPYC processors deliver the compute power needed; CERN was also able to reduce the number of servers by 33 percent, resulting in more compact systems with cost savings.
“With the AMD EPYC CPU, we’ve been able to show more than a terabit per second of data flowing from the servers sustained over days., Achieving this on a single server rather than requiring a supercomputer…is a significant advance.” – Niko Neufeld, Project Leader, LHCb Online Computing, CERN
Telecommunications: Casa Systems

Challenge: Casa Systems was looking for the packet core throughput needed to deliver next-generation 5G network solutions.
Solution: In tandem with hardware partner HPE, Case Systems deployed AMD EPYC processors as the platform for its packet core software, with the aim of demonstrating throughput beyond existing performance records and unprecedented cost-effectiveness for its customers.
Results: Performance testing showed packet core throughput exceeding 750Gbps, breaking existing records by a considerable margin, and allowing Casa Systems to deliver the integrated solutions required for the bandwidth of ultra-broadband 5G.
“AMD EPYC processors allow us to test the boundaries of what’s possible, with better performance at a reduced price per watt.” – Andrew Gibbs, VP, Wireless Solution Architecture, Casa Systems
