Many automotive applications, specifically LiDAR, are becoming more reliant on lower power, lower cost, and more compact form factors while supporting the latest sensor interfaces. Raw data from LiDAR to domain controller requires the right interface to pass the data quickly.

Spartan UltraScale+ XA: Newest Automotive-Grade FPGA from AMD

To address these market needs, AMD is introducing the latest addition to the Automotive (XA) family: the Spartan™ UltraScale+™ XASU35P FPGA. This device is automotive-qualified and optimized for ADAS sensor applications.

The new Spartan UltraScale+ XASU35P device is available in 12x12 mm packaging, a very small footprint ideal for camera vision and LiDAR applications. It’s also available in a chipscale package, designed for increased routing/signal density for I/Os, better solder joint reliability, and enhanced electrical performance.

Optimized Performance and Small Form Factor for Automotive Applications

The Spartan UltraScale+ XA device joins the AMD portfolio of automotive-grade, safe, and highly scalable FPGAs and adaptive SoCs, including Zynq™ 7000 XA SoC, Zynq UltraScale+ XA MPSoC, and Artix™ UltraScale+ XA FPGA product families.

“As the automotive LiDAR market continuously innovates, optimizing form factor, power, and data processing has become even more critical for automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers,” said Wayne Lyons, Senior Director of Marketing, Automotive Segment, AMD. “With the release of this new, small-form-factor Spartan UltraScale+ XA device, AMD continues its commitment to developing devices that address data intensive and compact ADAS designs.”

This optimized architecture allows engineers to shrink design size without sacrificing overall performance. The XASU35P device offers MIPI D-PHY support with lane rate of up to 2.5 Gb/s, meeting the necessary data rate for point cloud generation. Performance/watt is an important metric in automotive design, affecting thermal, power delivery architecture, and overall cost. Automotive designers can use these devices for data ingestion and image/video processing for LiDARs.

AMD Spartan UltraScale+ XASU35P FPGAs offer optimized I/O in a small form factor and are designed to meet the applicable automotive qualification and functional-safety requirements described in ISO 26262 and AEC-Q100 temperature grades.
